2017 golden globe awards red carpet fashion recap

They walked the red carpet sheltered by a plastic tent, under brooding grey skies which threatened heavy rain.

But the stars of Hollywood made no concession to the stormy weather, as they strutted their stuff in a dazzling array of couture gowns at the 74th Golden Globes on Sunday.

Bringing a flash of silver were Drew Barrymore, Sofia Vergara, pregnant Natalie Portman, Nicole Kidman and Sarah Jessica Parker, in what was unmistakably the shade of the night.

Time to shine! (L-R) Drew Barrymore, Sofia Vergara, Natalie Portman and Nicole Kidman all brought the glamour to the 74th annual Golden Globe Awards held at the Beverly Hills Hilton in California on Sunday night

The four all rocked another strong trend - bold shoulders - in their striking gowns.

It was clear Sarah Jessica - nominated for Best Performance by an Actress in a Television Series – Musical or Comedy for her show Divorce - was having fun with her fashion. The actress spun around to show off her Vera Wang dress, which flew up around her in a cloud of fabric.

Meanwhile, Nicole told DailyMail.com that daughters Faith and Sunday Rose picked out her Alexander McQueen dress.

'I was trying all the frocks on and when I put this on they both jumped up and said "Mummy, you look like a beautiful fairy on that dress!" So that was it. I stopped trying on any of the others and said to them that I'm wearing the fairy dress to the Globes.'

Looking good: Drew showed off her slimmed down figure in her 1920s-style Monique Lhuillier dress (she presented an award)

'A beautiful fairy!' Nicole told DailyMail.com that daughters Faith and Sunday Rose picked out her Alexander McQueen dress; she was nominated for Best supporting actress for her film Lion

Time to shine: Love it or hate it, there was no denying that Sarah Jessica's dress made an impact

Now that's a dress! Sarah Jessica Parker had a Carrie Bradshaw moment as she twirled in her white Vera Wang gown on the red carpet for the Golden Globes on Sunday

She admitted: 'It's not really what I would normally wear but it made the girls happy.'

The ceremony at The Beverly Hilton in Los Angeles honours the best in film and American television of 2016 as chosen by the Hollywood Foreign Press Association (HFPA).

The nominees are split by genre within the TV and film categories and the event is seen as a predictor of how the Academy Awards might go in February.

And it's also a first look at the awards season's big fashion trends, which are sure to filter down to high streets everywhere in the coming months.

Oh baby! Natalie Portman covered her bump in mustard yellow with just a tasteful section of embellishment on the skirt

Her leading man: Natalie's French husband, ballet choreographer Benjamin Millepied, accompanied her

Twinkle twinkle! LaLa Land's Emma Stone wore a star-embellished gown, to collect her Best Performance by an Actress in a Motion Picture Musical or Comedy gong - one of seven won by the record-breaking movie

They're all white: Felicity Huffman (nominated for Best Performance by an Actress in a Limited Series or Motion Picture Made for Television for American Crime), Kristin Cavallari (presented pre-show coverage), Gwendoline Christie (Games Of Thrones) and Sienna Miller (presented an award)

Dots to strips:  Singer Janelle Monae (who wore Armani), Games Of Thrones star Sophie Turner, model Heidi Klum and actress Julia Louis-Dreyfus

Solid gold: Thandie Newton (nominated for Best supporting actress  for TV show Westworld) was dipped in sequins, while Naomie Harris (nominated for Best supporting actress for her film Moonlight) shimmered all over in Armani

Power couple: Justin Timberlake (nominated for Best Original Song  for Trolls' Can’t Stop The Feeling) looked on proudly as his wife Jessica Biel posed for the cameras

That's amore! Justin and Jessica were the picture of an adoring couple

Silver and foxy! Nicole sparkled in a shimmering metallic gown as she posed with her smart husband Keith Urban, while Kelly Preston wore a similar shade as she joined her husband John Travolta

Stars as diverse as LaLa Land's triumphant Globe best acress in a musical or comedy winner Emma Stone, Kristin Cavallari, Gwendoline Christie and Sienna Miller all rocked white, while grey and black were also popular choices.

Combining the two were models Naomi Campbell and Heidi Klum, in black and white stripes, while singer Janelle Monae and Games Of Thrones star Sophie Turner also wore a version of the striking look.

But there were also plenty of brighter shades on display, with a veritable rainbow of colours, from pregnant Natalie Portman in of the moment mustard yellow, to Lily Collins in dusty pink.

Natalie was accompanied by her French husband, ballet choreographer Benjamin Millepied, who made a rare public appearance at her side.

Her bright yellow frock was cut from heavy thick fabric which skimmed her bump, and the long-sleeved tasteful Jackie Kennedy-inspired design had just a small section of embellishment on the skirt and arms.

Emily Ratajkowski, Maisie Williams, Reese Witherspoon in custom Atelier Versace and Viola Davis all picked the same sunshine shade.

Another popular colour was pink, in all it's many shades.

What a doll: Fashion plate Lily Collins had a princess moment in pink Zuhair Murad Couture; she was nominated for Best Actress in a Musical or Comedy for her role in Rules Don’t Apply

Lily Collins's dusty pink ballgown was created especially for her by Zahair Murad couture, and worn with gems by Harry Winston.

The 27-year-old was in the running for a Golden Globe for her role in the film Rules Don't Apply.

'It's a special night for me I feel like a Hollywood princess,' she told DailyMail.com. And she looked like one, in her fairytale gown, as she arrived with her mother, Jill 2017 golden globe awards red carpet fashion recap Tavelman.

Sharing the honours as Miss Golden Globes at this year's ceremony were sisters Sophia, 19, Sistine, 17, and 13-year-old Scarlet - the daughters of actor Sylvester - who led arrivals for the 74th Golden Globe Awards.

The youthful trio kept their look classic in co-ordinating but distinct black Armani gowns, accessorised with some rather grown-up diamonds.

Also expecting was Wonder Woman's Gal Gadot, who flattered her bump with a striking black and white gown, which she held to better show off her bump.

And actress Saffron Burrows also showed off her pregnant figure on the red carpet, in a black dress worn under a jacket.
