Do you wear soft contacts? If so, how long before you change them? #1

I've been wearing contacts for a very long time. Always worn the Acuvue lenses and most recently the Acuvue 2's. I'm now getting some of the Acuvue Oasys contacts which seem to be pretty popular.
The thing is, I've always worn my contacts for anywhere from one to two months before I throw them out. I put them in solution every night and they never irritate my eyes. They say they're only good for 2 weeks but I'm wondering if that's more a way for them to get more money or do they truly hurt your eyes in some way that I'm not aware of?

I have daily wear and I can stretch them up to a week, but usually ditch them after 3-5 days. By the fifth day I usually need to use drops to get through the day without excessive blinking.

I'm like you, OP, I generally go anywhere from 1 to 2 months on a pair of contacts. I do encounter problems sometimes though. Apparently if you wear them too long, they don't filter oxygen through to your eyeballs well, and this can cause some slight swelling of the eyeball. Nothing serious or anything, assuming you change out the pair when experiencing it, but it can sometimes make me feel the pulse of the blood in my eyelids, so that's pretty strange.

I have some in now, I usually go for 4-5 days before I give my eyes a rest. When I wore colored contacts, I'd keep those in forever.
Damn they were so bad for my eyes.

I stretch them out to last at least a month. I'm starting to get tired of contacts.
Thinking about going with glasses this year for a change of pace (been wearing contacts for 14 years now). My face is round though so I need to find frames that go with that. If I can't, I will get contacts again and continue as usual.

So it sounds like they're safe to use until your eyes tell you otherwise, right? I wasn't about to ask the people there because I honestly felt I'd get a biased opinion. But I'm no doctor so I clearly could be wrong.

I put them in solution every night and typically keep the same pair for about 4 months. You can tell when they need to go because they'll really start drying your eyes out.
There's also that fizzy solution you can put them in that seems to prolong the use of them.

I have ones you're supposed to replace each month, I believe, but I can go 4-5 months without changing them. I don't really have any probably with dry eyes, although indoor malls and big stores like Walmart do tend to make my eyes dry up.

Just saw this article and the part below kinda caught me off guard. I can't remember the last time I change out my contact lens case...

What you're doing: You've been using the same contact lens case for as long as you can remember.
Why you should stop: First things first: Go to your bathroom and throw that old case away. Contact lens cases should only be used for three months tops before you replace with a new one, Thau says.

You guys wearing contacts for more than two weeks are nuts.
Anyways, I recently bought a 90 day supply of 1-day disposable contacts. I don't wear contacts often and I don't want the reusable ones sitting in solution for weeks/months.
They're more expensive but I'm liking them so far.

READ THIS
I used to be exactly the same. I would wear the same contacts for months at a time because they would never bother me. I would often forget how long I had been wearing a pair.
It was several years before I went back to the eye doctor, but when I did I found out a big detail I had been missing.
Your eyes unlike everything else in your body gets its oxygen from the air, and not the blood supply. If you wear contacts constantly without taking them out your body will start to compensate for this by growing veins further towards the center of your eye. This can even go past the colored part. It isn't noticeable by looking in the mirror. The doctor was able to show me using the Optomap scanner that they use.
If this condition gets too bad you can no longer wear contacts and you will not be able to have Lasik surgery either.
I now wear the 30-day continuous wear contacts but I take them out once a week.
Don't assume because your contacts are not bothering you that they are not doing damage. At least talk to your doctor about this.

I have gone somewhere around 6 months on my last pair of contacts before. I do extremely not recommend it. By the end of the ordeal I was wearing a pair of soft contacts with cracks and chunks missing.
You've inspired me to throw out the pair I'm wearing, two months is already stretching it.

I've been using monthly extended wear contacts for the past seven months or so and I've been very pleased with them. I just put them in at the start of the month and then wear them till the month is over, that includes sleeping with them in. After the first three months I went to get a thorough eye exam and my eyes are perfectly healthy; I've had no problems with dry eyes, redness, itchiness or other anomalies.

I wore contacts for about ten years. Only took them out once every couple of weeks, slept with them in, and would stretch a pair 2-3 months, depending. I switched back to wearing glasses because I started getting migraines from wearing contacts.

I would check with your eye doctor about how long you should wear them.
There are different contacts to fit people's interests. (Night and Day, Monthly, etc)

I wear bi-monthlies for 5-6 weeks. But I also only wear my contacts about 5 days a week and maybe only 18 hours on those days.
Since my lens are out of my head so often I feel it's best to use this solution.

And just try to get my contacts to last as long as possible.

I have used various brands of contacts and simply wear then till I experience any sort of discomfort. Then it's straight to the trash. That's usually anywhere from 1 to 3 months. I don't wear then all night or anything by the way, I take them out every night. I am not going to throw away a pair due to some arbitrary cut off date if they otherwise feel fine while wearing them. I would suggest the same. Just listen to your body (or eyes).

Yes! This stuff is great if you wear your contacts daily.
Do not take your lenses out early, leave them soaking for the 6-8 hours or else the chemicals are not fully off and that causes irritation.

I used to do 2-week lenses that I'd change once every month because I'd only wear them 2 or 3 days out of the week. Eventually, I couldn't go a few hours without my eyes getting infected (this is with religious washing), so I started wearing my glasses more and switched to dailies for basketball.
On a side note, do any of you experience degraded vision using contacts over glasses? I have very minor astigmatism in both eyes and my vision is significantly worse than in glasses, contributing to the eye strain I tend to experience with contacts. I recently got toric lenses and while my vision is noticeably better, it's still shite compared to glasses.

I don't know how people do this. If I even nod off for just 15-20mins, it feels like I have sandpaper in my eyes. It happens occasionally and I hate it. What type are you wearing?

I have a few family members who still wear the gas permeable hard contacts. Maybe not as popular but there are plenty of people who still wear them.

I can go over a year with the same pair. I've been using Acuvue Advance with hydraclear for a few years now and they're by far the best lenses I've ever had in 15+ years of wearing contacts. Ordered 24 lenses over a year ago and still have 20 left over. I change the solution, Renu, in my case every time I wear them and I never rub my lenses or wear them when sleeping.
