Hey all! Today we’ve got a special treat…not only do we have an amazing tutorial from Caroline, we also have a giveaway from Girl Charlee! Read on to find out how to sew this chic maxi skirt and don’t forget to enter the Rafflecopter at the end of the post…take it away, Caroline!

Hi Go To Sew readers! Caroline here from with a clothing DIY that is absolutely PERFECT for transitioning your wardrobe from Summer to Fall. Maxi skirts + dresses have been around for a few seasons and it looks like their sticking around for another one… with makes me happy because WHO doesn’t love slipping into a comfy maxi skirt to wear running errands or on a date night?

Today, I’ve got what’s probably the EASIEST maxi skirt DIY you’ll ever find. 10 minutes, y’all. That. Is. It.

For this DIY, you’ll need about 1 1/2 yards of KNIT fabric (depending on your length), a package of 3/4″-1″ elastic, and coordinating thread.

Girl Charlee sent me this GORGEOUS Aztec print diy maxi skirt tutorial cotton jersey knit that screams Fall to me, so that’s what I chose to use for this project.

You’ll start by measuring your waist (or where you want your skirt to hit) to the floor (or where you want your hem to be. Add 1.5″ to this measurement.. this is the length you’ll cut your fabric. For the width, we are just going to use the width of the fabric… knit fabric is typically on a 54″-60″ wide bolt, which is perfect for this project! You’ll also want to measure the amount of elastic you’ll need. Fit it comfortably around your waist, overlap 1″, and cut.

Next, we’ll cut the fabric. Lay your fabric out keeping it folded like it came off of the bolt and cut at the measurement you calculated for your length (don’t forget to add 1.5″!)

Now, we’re going to make a back seam. You’ll put your fabric right sides together and pin and sew down the selvedge side creating one long seam.

Next, you’ll create a casing for your elastic.

fold over (to the wrong side) 1.25″. Pin in place and sew almost all the way around, leaving about a 2″ opening.

Take the elastic you cut and hook a safety pin through one end. You’ll use the safety pin to help guide the elastic through the casing.

Be careful to not get your elastic twisted. When you’ve reached the other end, overlap both ends of the elastic about 1″ and sew with a zig zag stitch back and forth several times.

Change your stitch back to a straight stitch and finish closing up the casing where you left the 2″ hole.

And guess what? You’re finished. I never sew a hem, because knit doesn’t fray or ravel… so you’re good to go!
