How to drape/wear a saree?

A saree is a 9 yard wonder that makes all women go gaga. It feels like a million bucks, and exuberates elegance like nothing else. You can wear one for a corporate event, or for a wedding, pick the right piece, style around it well, and the onlookers will not cease to appreciate. Time may have changed, hemlines may have gone higher, but the saree never fails to dazzle. The modern times render appreciation to various traditional, contemporary and eclectic styles of sarees as long as they exhibit some kind of ingenuity of design, celebrate a longstanding heritage, or manifest a popular culture. But, draping a saree is no cakewalk. And, today, the connoisseurs, the creative geniuses, and the simple mortals have become creative with saree draping styles, evolving and interpreting traditions in their own way and embracing them with a new stride.

If you are keen to make a statement in a saree, not only is it imperative to buy a good saree and pick a blouse and shoes and jewelry that perfectly complement it, it is also essential to learn how to drape a saree perfectly.

We bring you a little help with that. Take a look.

This is the guide to wearing the traditional Indian or the Nivi saree. The most popular draping style, this originated in Andhra Pradesh and became popular because of its versatility and convenience factor.

Wear a petticoat:

Get the basics sorted. Pick a petticoat or underskirt which is close in color to the color of your saree (you can make an exception in the case of designer net sarees by going for a contrasting petticoat in a fancy material). Tie it tightly on or below the waist, never above the navel. Make sure it is shorter than your saree.

While cotton petticoats are the conventional choice, a lot of designer sarees today are worn with satin petticoats too. Also, instead of a tie-up petticoat, you can go for an elastic petticoat.

Tuck the upper end of the saree in the petticoat: Start wearing the saree by tucking the upper end of the saree in the petticoat from the right of the navel. Make sure your tucks are tight. Wrap the saree around you completely once, until you are back to the point where you started. It is better to wear heels before you start draping the saree.

Make the pleats: Pleats are probably the most graceful part of a saree. Make 7-12 pleats each of 4-6 inches, depending upon the length of the saree, and the desired length of the pallav, starting from where you started tying the saree.

Drape again: As you are done with the pleats, drape the remaining fabric around once more from left to right, and bring it round your hips to the front, holding the top edge of the sari.

Make the pallav: Raise the remaining fabric of the saree on to your shoulder. You can pleat this part again and hold it there in a contemporary style, or let the pallav loose over your arm.

Fasten it up: Fasten the saree by pinning up the pleats and the pallav from the shoulder so that you can strut around comfortably.

And voila! You are all saree-ready.

This is the very basic style. Once you have mastered this drape, you can get more creative and work out new and unusual ways to drape a saree, trying on the dhoti drape, or tying the end part of the saree like a scarf. You can also check for more tips to wear a saree online.

Happy sareeing!
